Regularly Scheduled Caboose Train Rides Begin Sunday, May 18, 2008!
Have you ever dreamed of riding in an authentic Railroad Caboose? Then visit the Whippany Railway Museum on Sunday, May 18th (and select Sundays in June, July & September), and your dreams can come true!
The Museum is pleased to offer the start of regularly scheduled excursion Train Rides to our visitors that will feature a unique collection of antique restored Cabooses from historic rail lines of the past that passengers can ride in!
Passengers can climb aboard the Caboose of their choice and experience an old-fashioned, relaxing way of spending a Sunday afternoon with the Family. While swaying to the motion of the old cars you can listen to the nostalgic "clickety-clack" sounds the wheels make as they clatter over the rail joints. The 45-minute round trip allows visitors to view the train and landscape as only Railroaders did for over 100 years.
The train makes a 10-mile round trip run along the historic Whippanong Trail, the ancient pathway used by the Lenape Indians who lived in the surrounding countryside centuries ago. Passing through Whippany, East Hanover, Livingston and Roseland, the ride features the thrill of crossing high above the Passaic River over a newly-rebuilt high trestle bridge.
The locomotive assigned to pull the train is historic as well... it is a classic RS-1 diesel locomotive originally built for the Soo Line Railroad in 1954 by the American Locomotive Company of Schenectady, NY.
Trains depart from the Museum site at 1, 2, 3 & 4 PM, Rain or Shine.

The Caboose Train Rides are a fundraising effort to benefit the Museum, a non-profit organization comprised of New Jersey-related rail and transportation equipment and artifacts, staffed by volunteers. Donations from the public help to keep the Museum operational, but funds are still needed to support this unique New Jersey treasure. Proceeds from these rides will further enhance the Museum's historic preservation efforts.
