Donation Policy The Whippany Railway Museum, Inc. may accept contributions or gifts in the form of money or property. Terms, restrictions or trusts may be imposed upon such gifts or contributions by the donors thereof, provided that such terms, restrictions or trusts are not inconsistent with the purposes of this Corporation. Only persons designated by the Museum's Board of Trustees are authorized to accept contributions. Tax Information The Whippany Railway Museum, Inc. is both Federal and State of New Jersey tax-exempt. Contributions as noted above are tax deductible and are welcomed and appreciated. Gifts to the Museum may be made for tax purposes. For further information regarding tax-exempt donations, please check with the Internal Revenue Service and the State of New Jersey-Division of Taxation. Establishment of the donation value for tax purposes is the responsibility of the donor. Donations of non-cash materials valued by the donor at $5,000.00 or greater and intended as a tax deduction, must be accompanied by a qualified, professional appraisal. The Museum or its staff may not, as an interested party, provide a qualified appraisal of the value of gifts. IRS Publication 990 specifically states that it is the responsibility of the donor to value a donation on their tax return and it is the responsibility of the non-profit organization to ONLY acknowledge in writing the details of the items donated. Gift Acknowledgment It is the Museum's standard policy to acknowledge gifts of all types by letter with an inventory, unless the donor is anonymous or states that a formal acknowledgement is not needed.
